Why Hood Struts Are Essential for Every Ford Owner

If you’ve ever struggled with a flimsy prop rod while working under the hood, you know the frustration. It’s always in the way! In 2025, there’s simply no reason to settle for outdated equipment when hood struts offer a safer, and more convenient way. Hood strut kits eliminate the cumbersome prop rod and provide secure, hands-free access to your engine bay—whether you’re performing routine maintenance, showcasing your vehicle at car shows, or tackling complex engine modifications.

For Ford Mustang, Bronco, Explorer, Focus, and Maverick owners, upgrading to a quality hood strut system transforms your working experience and enhances your vehicle’s aesthetic appeal. This comprehensive guide explores everything you need to know about choosing and installing the perfect hood strut kit.

What Are Hood Struts and How Do They Work?

Hood struts, also known as hood lift supports or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders that use gas springs to hold your vehicle’s hood in an open position. Unlike traditional prop rods that require manual placement and can slip or bend, hood struts automatically support the hood’s weight once you lift it past a certain point.

The system typically consists of two gas-charged cylinders mounted on either side of the hood, connected to the vehicle’s body using engineered brackets. When you open the hood, the struts extend smoothly and lock into position, providing stable support without any additional effort. The dual-strut design distributes weight evenly and ensures your hood stays securely open during your entire work session. So you can ditch that annoying prop rod.

The Benefits of No-Drill Hood Strut Installation

Preserve Your Vehicle’s Original Condition

The most critical feature of any hood strut kit is a no-drill design. Quality manufacturers engineer their kits to utilize existing OEM mounting points, which means you never have to modify your vehicle’s sheet metal or structural components. This approach maintains your car’s structural integrity, preserves resale value, and allows you to return to stock configuration if needed.

Drilling holes into your hood or fenders creates permanent modifications that can compromise load-bearing elements and introduce potential rust points. A properly designed no-drill kit respects your vehicle’s engineering while delivering professional-grade functionality.

Enhanced Safety and Convenience

Traditional prop rods present multiple safety concerns. They can slip out of place, especially on windy days or when working on uneven surfaces. They’re often positioned awkwardly, requiring you to reach across the engine bay. And if they fail, your hood could slam shut unexpectedly, potentially causing injury or damage.

Hood struts help mitigate these risks. With two robust gas cylinders supporting your hood, you gain complete confidence that it will remain open throughout your maintenance session. The hands-free operation means you can focus entirely on your work without worrying about repositioning support mechanisms.

Improved Engine Bay Access

A well-designed hood strut kit provides unobstructed access to your entire engine bay. Without a prop rod occupying valuable space, you can easily reach all components, perform fluid checks, install modifications, and detail your engine compartment without interference.

This clear access is particularly valuable at car shows, where judges need an unimpeded view to evaluate your engine bay’s condition, cleanliness, and detailing. Hood struts present a clean, professional appearance that showcases your vehicle at its best.

Key Features to Look for in Hood Strut Kits

Premium Gas Cylinder Quality

The gas cylinders are the heart of your Ford hood struts, and their quality directly impacts performance and longevity. High-grade cylinders feature hardened, corrosion-resistant components and precision-engineered seals that prevent premature failure.

Quality gas struts operate smoothly across temperature ranges and maintain consistent pressure over thousands of cycles. They should lift your hood effortlessly and hold it securely without sagging or requiring adjustment. When gas cylinders do eventually reach the end of their service life, replacements will be readily available and simple to install.

Durable Steel Bracket Construction

The mounting brackets transfer all the hood’s weight to your vehicle’s body, so they must be constructed from high-quality steel. Look for powder-coated finishes that resist corrosion and maintain their appearance through years of exposure to engine heat, road salt, and weather conditions.

Brackets are precisely engineered to match your vehicle’s specific mounting points and hood geometry. Universal-fit brackets often require compromises that affect performance or installation difficulty.

Vehicle-Specific Engineering

Generic hood strut kits rarely deliver optimal results. The best manufacturers engineer separate kits for each vehicle application, accounting for hood weight, mounting point locations, and clearance requirements. This dedicated engineering ensures proper operation and eliminates the fitment issues common with universal products.

For owners with aftermarket hoods, look for manufacturers who can supply correctly-sized gas cylinders based on your specific hood weight.

Installation: Simpler Than You Think

30-Minute Install with Basic Tools

Quality no-drill hood strut kits are designed for straightforward DIY installation. Most can be completed in 30 minutes or less using only a 10mm wrench. The kit includes all necessary hardware—no additional bolts or specialized tools required.

Professional hood strut installation instructions with detailed photos or video guides walk you through each step. The process typically involves locating OEM mounting points, attaching the brackets, and connecting the gas cylinders. Many enthusiasts find the installation process satisfying and straightforward, even with minimal mechanical experience.

Professional Results Without Modification

Because quality kits use OEM attachment points, your installation will look factory-fresh. The hardware integrates seamlessly with your vehicle’s existing structure, and the low-profile design maintains clean engine bay aesthetics.

If you ever need to reverse the installation, the process is equally simple. Remove the strut assembly, reinstall the original prop rod, and your vehicle returns to stock configuration without any evidence of modification.

Maintenance and Longevity

Understanding Gas Cylinder Lifespan

Gas-charged cylinders have a finite service life, typically measured in cycles rather than years. Factors affecting longevity include operating temperature, cycle frequency, and exposure to corrosive environments. Quality cylinders will provide years of reliable service under normal conditions.

When cylinders eventually lose pressure, replacement is straightforward. Reputable manufacturers offer replacement hood struts, allowing you to fix your system easily. This serviceability extends the overall value of your investment.

Simple Care Guidelines

Hood lifts require minimal maintenance. Keep the cylinder rods clean and free from debris that could damage seals. Periodically inspect mounting brackets for tightness and check that hardware remains secure. Avoid overextending the hood beyond its designed range, and never place additional weight on an open hood supported by struts.

FAQs About Hood Struts

What are the main benefits of upgrading to hood struts?

Hood struts provide multiple advantages over traditional prop rods. They offer hands-free operation with automatic hood support, improved safety by eliminating the risk of hood collapse, unobstructed engine bay access for easier maintenance and detailing, cleaner aesthetics for car shows, and more stable support in windy conditions. The no-drill installation preserves your vehicle’s original condition while delivering professional functionality. For anyone who regularly works under the hood or displays their vehicle, hood struts transform the ownership experience.

How long do hood struts typically last before needing replacement?

Gas cylinders in hood struts have a finite lifespan that depends on usage frequency and environmental conditions. Under normal use, quality gas struts can provide reliable service for many years. However, all gas-charged cylinders eventually lose pressure. When you notice your hood no longer stays open as firmly or requires more effort to lift, it’s time to replace the gas cylinders. Reputable manufacturers sell replacement cylinders separately, making it easy and affordable to restore full functionality without replacing the entire kit.

Can I install hood struts if I have an aftermarket hood?

Yes, hood struts can typically be used with aftermarket hoods, but cylinder sizing is critical. Aftermarket hoods often weigh differently than OEM hoods, requiring different gas cylinder pressure ratings for proper operation. Contact the manufacturer with your specific hood weight, and they can supply appropriately-sized cylinders that will function correctly. The mounting brackets usually work with aftermarket hoods as long as the OEM mounting points are retained, but always verify compatibility before purchasing.

Will installing hood struts change my hood alignment?

No, properly installed hood struts will not affect hood alignment. Quality no-drill kits use OEM mounting points and are engineered to work with your vehicle’s existing geometry. The hood closes and latches exactly as it did with the prop rod. During installation, you simply remove the prop rod and install the strut assembly—no adjustment to hinges, latches, or bumpers is required. If you experience alignment issues after installation, it typically indicates incorrect installation or a problem unrelated to the struts themselves.

I installed this kit on my 2019 Ford Explorer and the install was as simple as the video illustrates. The only suggestion I can offer is regarding the auxiliary bolt that is part of the lower/fender bracket. The bolt passes through a rather large diameter hole on the fender and a large washer with lock washer would be a good idea. I did this to mine and it allowed me to tighten the bolt/nut with confidence.

I would recommend this kit to anyone. It’s over $100 less than another aftermarket manufacturer and I feel this is the superior design.
